Gram-positive short rods, nonspore-forming, noncapsulated, motile when
cultured below 30 ºC; aerobe and facultative anaerobic, temperature limits
of growth 0 to 45 ºC, acid produced from some carbohydrates (no gas from
glucose), catalase positive, oxidase negative, methyl-red positive,
Voges-Proskauer usually positive, indole and H
2S are not produced, urea is
not hydrolysed, organic growth factors are required.
