Gram-negative, spiral/coccoid, 0.5–0.6 x 0.7–2.6 μm rods. Motile by a single polar
flagellum.
Colonies on Karmali agar, CCDA and trypticase soy agar are 0.3–2.0 mm in diameter
at 37 and 40 ºC after 48 hours incubation, whitish-grey in colour with a light centre,
margins are entire and the colony surfaces are typically smooth and flat. Alpha-
hemolysis is negative. Growth on Mueller-Hinton agar is very restricted.
Microaerophilic and anaerobic. Thermophilic. Grow at 37-42 ºC, but not at 25 ºC.
No growth occurs in the presence of 2.0 or 3.5% (w/v) NaCl at 40 ºC. No growth on
Nutrient agar. Can grow on MacConkey agar. Variable growth on 1% glycine (30 % of
strains).
Isolated from cloacal swabs of captive adult whooping cranes (Grus americana) in Canada.
Undetermined.

Positive results for oxidase & gamma-glutamyltranspeptidase (most of strains).
Negative results for hippurate hydolysis, indoxyl acetate hydrolysis & alkaline phosphatase. No carbohydrates fermentation.
Variable results for nitrate reduction, urease, catalase &
H2S production on TSI.
