Arcanobacterium phocae Pascual Ramos, Foster and Collins, 1997.
Gram-positive coccobacilli and short rods, occurring singly, in pairs or in clusters;
short diphtheroid forms may occur. Non-motile. Non-spore-forming. Mycolic acids are
not present.
Colonies are white, tiny, low convex, after 24 h of incubation in anaerobic atmosphere,
on 5% sheep blood agar. Beta-haemolytic. Facultative anaerobic. Grows at 37 ºC.
Isolated from tissues and fluids of common seals (Phoca vitulina) and grey seals (Halichoerus grypus) in mixed cultures from
pneumonic and septicemic seals.
it is unclear but the strains have been recovered in mixed cultures from pneumonic and septicemic seals.

Non-acid fast. Metabolism is strictly fermentative.
