Phylum Bacillota (Firmicutes), Class Erysipelotrichia, Order Erysipelothrichales, Family Erysipelotrichaceae, Genus Tannockella,
Tannockella kyphosi Pardesi et al. 2022, type species of the genus.
Weakly Gram-positive (easily decolourized and may appear Gram-negative) rods, 0.7
x 2.0-3.0 µm, sometimes with one or two pointed ends. No endospores produced.
Non-motile; no flagella produced.
Colonies on YCFA-M agar appear white, opaque and shiny with a diameter about 1
mm after a week growing anaerobically at 19 ºC. Growth occurs in the temperature
range 20-28 ºC (optimum, 24 ºC), at a pH range of pH 6.9-8.5 (optimum, pH 7.8). The
optimum NaCl concentration required for growth is 0.045% (w/v). Tolerates up to 1%
(w/v) NaCl. Grows only under reducing conditions in the absence of oxygen.
Isolated from the fermentative hindgut contents of the herbivorous marine fish Kyphosus sydneyanus, in New Zealand.
Undetermined.
