Gram-positive cocci, 0.6-1.6 µm in diameter, occuring as single cells, in pairs or
chains. Non-motile. Non-spore-forming.
Colonies are circular, raised and white with entire margin. Growth temperature is
5-40 ºC, with optimum growth at 30 ºC (pH 10). NaCl is not required for its growth. The
NaCl concentration for growth is 0-6% (w/v), with optimum growth at 0-2% (pH 10, 30
C). The growth pH range is pH 7.0-10.5, optimum pH is 9.0-10.5. Facultatively
anaerobic.
Isolated from indigo fermentation liquor obtained from a dyeing workshop in Otaru, Hokkaido, Japan.

D-mannitol, N-acetyl-glucosamine, D-rafinose, D-ribose, salicin, starch, sucrose, trehalose, turanose, D-tagatose and D-xylose.
Negative results for acid and alkaline phosphatase, catalase, cellulase, caseinase, cystine arylamidase, DNase, alpha-fucosidase,
gelatinase, alpha- and beta-galactosidase, beta-glucuronidase, alpha-glucosidase, N-acetyl-beta-glucosaminidase, lipase (C14),
alpha-mannosidase, oxidase, trypsin, chymotrypsin, valine arylamidase, xylan hydrolysis, acid production from: D- and L-fucose,
inulin, rhamnose, erythritol, D-arabinose, L-xylose, D-adonitol, methyl beta-D-xylopyranoside, L-sorbose, dulcitol, inositol, D-sorbitol,
