QUALITY CONTROL
Following germs should have a good growth at 35 °C in 24-48 hours:
Neisseria meningitidis ATCC 13090,
Streptococcus pneumoniae
ATCC 6305, Streptococcus pyogenes ATCC 19615.
Can be supplemented with yeast extract, haemin and menadione for Bacteroides spp. growth. Other ingredients
may be added for various purposes (NADPH, 6.5% sodium chloride, penicillinase, p-amino benzoic acid or
antibiotics).
Variants without bovine brain (Heart Infusion Broth), due to risk material involved, are commercialy available.
COMPOSITION
Calf Brains, Infusion from 200 g ........................................................ 7.7 g
Beef heart infusion solids  ..................................................................9.8 g
Proteose peptone  ...........................................................................10.0 g
Glucose  ............................................................................................2.0 g
Sodium chloride  ................................................................................5.0 g
Di-sodium phosphate .........................................................................2.5 g
Distilled water ad 1000ml; adjust pH to 7.4 ± 0.2 Sterilize by autoclaving at
121 ºC for 15 minutes. For solid state add 15 g agar to 1 liter of medium.

Medium may also be used as a blood agar base. Melt, cool to 45-50 ºC
then add 5% sheep or bovine blood.
DESCRIPTION
Medium  used the cultivation of fastidious and nonfastidious microorganisms, including aerobic and anaerobic
bacteria. Its highly nutritious formula allows the growth of a large variety of microorganisms.
