Gram positive cocci, grouped in pairs or short chains, non-spore-forming.
Grey–white, 0.2–0.3 mm in diameter colnies after 24 h incubation on sheep blood
agar. Initially non-haemolytic, become beta-haemolytic after 3 days.
Facultatively anaerobic, growth at 37.0 °C. Growth on : Trypticase soy agar with sheep
blood.
2 isolates from seals (Halichoerus grypus & Phoca vitulina)
Unknown (1 lung isolate from dead seal).

Acid is produced from lactose. Maltose variable.
Acid is not produced from L-arabinose, D-arabitol, cyclodextrin, glycogen, inulin,
mannitol, melibiose, melezitose, methyl beta-D-glucopyranoside, pullulan, raffinose,
ribose, sorbitol, starch, sucrose, D-tagatose & trehalose.
Alanine phenylalanine proline arylamidase, acid phosphatase (weak), chymotrypsin,
leucine arylamidase & valine arylamidase positive.
Beta-galactosidase, urease, ADH & PAL are variable.
VP,esculin, alpha & beta-glucosidase, beta-glucuronidase, catalase & hippurate negative
(tested on API test kits)
