Old synonym:
Streptococcus faecalis subsp. malodoratus  Pette 1955.
Gram-positive, coccoid cells, grouped mostly in pairs or short chain. Non-motile.
Colonies on blood agar or nutrient agar are circular, smooth, and entire. The type
strain does not grow at 45°C or survive heating at 60°C for 30 min. Non-pigmented.
Some strains produce slime.
Isolated from Gouda cheese.

Biochemically close to Enterococcus avium.
Positive results for hydrolysis of esculin, alpha-galactosidase (negative for
E. avium),
H2S production, beta-galactosidase, acid production from: adonitol, D- or L-arabitol,
dulcitol, gluconate, 2-keto-gluconate, mannitol, melibiose, alpha-methyl-D-mannoside, D-raffinose, rhamnose, sorbitol,  L-sorbose,
sucrose, D-tagatose, trehalose & xylitol.

Negative results for hippurate hydrolysis, arginine dihydrolase, beta-glucuronidase, Voges-Proskauer test, acid production from: L-
arabinose, glycogen, inulin, 5-Keto-gluconate, D-lyxose, melezitose, alpha-Methyl-D-glucoside & starch.

Variable results for acid production from: glycerol D-turanose, D- or L-Xylose.
