Gram positive cocci, grouped in short chains, in pairs or single cells. Non-motile.
Colonies on blood agar, incubated at 37 °C, are non-pigmented, alpha-haemolytic,
small colonies up to 0.5 mm in diameter.
Growth occurs at 45 °C and in broth containing 6.5% NaCl.
Isolated from human stool samples and fermented cereal grains. Susceptible to vancomycin.
Possible lactic acid bacteria.

Positive results for beta-glucosidase, glycyl-tryptophan arylamidase, beta-
mannosidase, N-acetyl-beta-glucosaminidase, pyrrolidonyl arylamidase, leucine
aminopeptidase, aesculin hydrolysis in the presence of bile, pyruvate utilization, Voges
–Proskauer test, acid production from: glycerol, methyl alpha-D-glucopyranoside,
maltose, ribose, sucrose, trehalose, methyl beta-D-glucopyranoside & tagatose.
Negative results for hydrolysis of arginine, beta-galactosidase (both substrates), beta-
glucuronidase, alpha-galactosidase, alkaline phosphatase, alanine-phenylalanine-
proline arylamidase, urease, acid production from: arabinose, inulin, lactose, mannitol, melibiose, raffinose, sorbitol, sorbose, D-
arabitol, cyclodextrin, glycogen, melezitose & pullulan.
Variable results for hippurate hydrolysis.
