Gram positive cocci, elongated, occur mostly in pairs or short chains. Non-motile.
Non-pigmented. Facultatively anaerobic.
Grow at 40 °C, but growth at 10 and 45 °C is weak. Strains survive heating at 60 °C for
30 minutes. No growth in 6.5 % NaCl. Grow in a 40% bile M17 broth.
Isolated from cecal contents of donkeys (Equus asinus).

Positive results for esculin hydrolysis, hippurate hydrolysis, leucine arylaminidase,
pyrrolidonylarylaminidase beta-glucosidase acid production from: D-xylose, galactose,
D-glucose, D-fructose, D-mannose, N-acetyl-glucosamine, amygdalin, arbutin, salicin,
cellobiose, maltose, lactose, trehalose, starch & beta-gentibiose.
Negative results for alpha-galactosidase, beta-galactosidase, beta-glucuronidase,
alkaline phosphatase, arginine dihydrolase, acid production from: glycerol, erythritol,
arabinose, ribose, L-xylose, adonitol, methyl alpha-D-glucoside, L-sorbose, dulcitol, inositol, mannitol, sorbitol, methyl alpha - D -
mannoside, melibiose, sucrose, inulin, melezitose, D-raffinose, glycogen, xylitol, D-turanose, D-lyxose, D-tagatose, fucose, arabitol,
gluconate, 2-ketogluconate & 5-ketogluconate.
Variable results for rhamnose acidification (weak positive).
