Genus Staphylococcus
Gram positive, spherical cells, 0.5-1.5 μm in diameter, occuring singly, in
pairs or forming irregular clusters (dividing in more than one plane).
Metabolism respiratory and fermentative, many carbohydrates can be
utilized with acid production (lactic or acetic acid). Facultative anaerobes,
non-motile, catalase produced (most of them).

synonym of
Staphylococcus vitulinus
Genus Macrococcus
Gram positive, spherical cells, occuring
singly, in pairs or clusters. Generally, can be
differentiated from staphylococci by oxidase
positive and a larger diameter (0.8-2.4 μm).

Genus Jeotgalicoccus
Gram positive cocci, catalase and oxidase
positive. Urease and nitrate reduction negative.
Genus Nosocomiicoccus
Gram positive cocci, catalase and oxidase
positive. Urease and nitrate reduction negative.
Weak or no sugars fermentation.
Genus Salinicoccus
Gram positive cocci, catalase and oxidase
positive. Moderately halophilic. Most of them
produce orange or pink-red pigments.
