Gram negative, 0.45-0.55 x 1.5-1.7 µm, coccobacilli or small rods, with occasional
filamentous forms.
Colonies on chocolate agar incubated in air plus 10% extra CO2 are raised, smooth,
and rounded 0.5 -1.0 mm in diameter after 24 h.
Colonies on brain-heart infusion agar supplemented with NAD are very adherent and
show yellow pigmentation when collected on a loop.
Weak hemolysis  after 3 days incubation. CAMP test negative. Require increased
concentration of CO
2 in incubation atmosphere for primary isolation but this
requirement is lost upon subcultivation. Require V-factor but not X-factor for growth.
Optimum temperature 35-37 °C. Growth on Mac Conkey agar is negative.
Has been isolated from the nasopharynxes of  6 of 28 apparently normal cats and from the lower respiratory tract of a cat with chronic
obstructive pulmonary disease.
Has been isolated from the lower respiratory tract of a cat with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
