pluranimalium Vela et al. 2009.
Gram-negative cocci, 1.5-2.0 μm in diameter. Nonspore-forming.
Colonies are circular, nonpigmented, nonhaemolytic, smooth and entire on blood
agar after 48 h incubation at 37 ºC.
Strict aerobe. Growth occurs at 22-37 ºC but not at 42, 15 or 4 ºC. Growth is enhanced
in 5-10% CO2 on 5% sheep blood agar and chocolate agar, in Brain-heart infusion
broth containing 0.5 or 1.5% NaCl, but not with 5.0 or 6.5% NaCl. No growth on
MacConkey agar.
Isolated from pigs and a sheep.
Admin note: a strain isolated from dog was biochemically very close to M. canis and
M. pluranimalium and the difference between these two species could not be made.
Undetermined. The type strain was isolated from the nasal turbinate of an apparently
healthy pig.

Positive results for catalase, esterase and oxidase. Assimilates glucose and malate.
Negative results for acetoin production, acid phosphatase, DN-ase, esculin
hydrolysis, gelatin liquefaction, indole production, nitrates reduction, urease, valine
arylamidase, lipase (C14), cystine arylamidase, arginine dihydrolase, lysine
decarboxylase, ornithine decarboxylase, tryptophan deaminase, alpha-glucosidase,
N-acetyl-beta-glucosaminidase, beta-glucosidase, beta-glucuronidase,
alpha-galactosidase, beta-galactosidase, alpha-mannosidase, alpha-fucosidase,
alpha-chymotrypsin & trypsin. Acid is not produced from D-glucose, D-mannitol,
inositol, D-sorbitol, L-rhamnose, sucrose, melibiose, amygdalin & L-arabinose. Does
not assimilate citrate, phenyl acetate, L-arabinose, D-mannose, D-mannitol,
N-acetyl-Dglucosamine, maltose, gluconate, caprate and adipate.
Variable results for alkaline phosphatase.
