Gram-negative coccobacilli, 0.7-0.8 x 0.9-1.0 μm. Non-spore-forming. Non-motile.
Colonies are smooth, convex, entire, opaque, glistening and pale yellow, 2-3 mm in
diameter on nutrient agar after 48 h of incubation at 30 ºC. No growth factor is required.
Can grow at pH 5.0-10.0 (optimum 7.0-8.0). Strictly aerobic. Growth temperature 10-40
ºC (optimum 25-30 ºC). Can grow on MacConkey agar and Simmons' citrate agar.
Water-soluble brown pigment on heart infusion agar containing tyrosine is not
produced.
Isolated from a black stain on the right shoulder of a woman on the mural paintings on the west wall inside the stone chamber of
Takamatsuzuka tumulus in Asuka village, Nara Prefecture, Japan.

Description is based based mostly on API 20NE and API ZYM (bioMerieux) results.

Positive results for acid and alkaline phosphatase, catalase, esterase (C4), leucine arylamidase, nitrate reduction to nitrite, oxidase,
urease & naphthol-AS-BI-phosphohydrolase.
Can utilize: L-arabinose, adipate, DL-malate, citrate & phenylacetate.

Negative results for arginine dihydrolase, esculin hydrolysis,  esterase lipase (C8), lipase (C14), gelatin hydrolysis, alpha- and
beta-galactosidase, beta-glucuronidase, alpha- and beta-glucosidase, N-acetyl-beta-glucosaminidase, alpha-mannosidase,
alpha-fucosidase, indole production, urease, valine arylamidase, cystine arylamidase, trypsin, alpha-chymotrypsin, acid production
from glucose.

No utilization of: D-glucose, D-mannose, D-xylose, lactose, sucrose, maltose, N-acetyl-D-glucosamine, D-mannitol, D-gluconate &
n-caprate.
