Comparative bacterial identification results of
'ABIS online' and 'APIWEB' software

The aim of the study was to validate the ABIS software by comparison with a commercially available,
standardized identification system. The morphological and biochemical characters of 12 reference strains
and 21 wild isolates were tested by "ABIS 10 online" & "APIWEB" software (Biomerieux) using all laboratory
available tests (classical tests and API strips). Results are presented in the tables below:

  • Discrepancies between APIWEB and Vibrio/Aeromonas database of ABIS 10 were observed when testing the ATCC 35654
    Aeromonas hydrophila collection strain. ABIS found A. hydrophila with lower id% than A. taiwanensis, requiring more tests for a
    better discrimination. Aeromonas taiwanensis is not included in APIWEB identification databases.
  • The slightly lower ABIS id% obtained when testing ATCC 49943 Campylobacter sputorum subsp. bubulus, was caused by the
    exclusive use of "API Campy" (Biomerieux) strip tests. Some tests are included in ABIS  identification scheme and not included
    in Apiweb; and vice versa. Due to differences between databases and identification profiles, ABIS used only 8 tests vs APIWEB's
    20 tests. Also, 'biovar bubulus' cannot be differentiated from 'biovar sputorum' and has a questionable validity. According to On et
    al. 1998, strains classified previously as 'biovar bubulus' should be reclassified as 'biovar sputorum'.
  • When testing ATCC 25937 Campylobacter fetus subsp. fetus, APIWEB get C. fetus subsp. fetus 18% (a very low id. percent), and
    C. fetus subsp. venerealis 80%, while ABIS get C. fetus subsp. fetus 98%.
  • In the case of F8H5 strain, APIWEB's result was Salmonella spp., but was unable to validate its results (unacceptable profile),
    ABIS also found Salmonella spp., but with lower id% and positioning Salmonellla below Edwardsiella hoshinae. The strain
    F8H5 was identified as Salmonella Kottbus by the national reference lab (IDSA Romania).
  • All other taxons  were identified with high probability by both ABIS 10 and APIWEB software. Comparable results were obtained
    for reference and wild strains. Moreover, some Salmonella strains were identified and confirmed serologically by rapid
    agglutination tests.

In conclusion, presented results show that, generally, ABIS 10 is capable of correct taxon identification, generates reliable
results, and can definitely compete with similar software.
